San Diego's NEW Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) Helping People in Crisis: Mental Health Support Without Uniformed Law Enforcement

Program Overview

Telecare San Diego's newest behavioral health program is a 24/7, non-law enforcement, Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) serving individuals of all ages experiencing mental health crisis utilizing recovery principles. We will exist to respond to crisis with the goal of safety for all. Our community has recognized a need to respond to mental health crisis and those under the influence from a posture of compassion, patience, and recovery. This program collaborates and accepts referrals from the San Diego Access and Crisis Line (ACL) and law enforcement. San Diego's MCRT will offer crisis triage and management, risk assessment, in-person intervention, and case management. Each team will respond to calls from the mobile office van to provide services directly in the field in the following San Diego Regions: Central, East, South, North Central and North Inland.

Employment Status:

  • 5 days per week available
  • 4 days per week available
  • 3 days per week available
  • 2 days per week available
  • Per Diem available

Shift: AM, Evening, and Overnight

All days of the week available. We especially need weekend availability.

What will you do?

  • You will be 1 of 3 crisis responders assigned to a Crisis Response Vehicle. When MCRT receives crisis calls from ACL (and eventually 9-1-1) that are determined appropriate for our services, you will be dispatched in your team 's van to the individual 's location to assist.
  • The Peer Role will be used to help build rapport with the individual in crisis. You will get to use your own story of recovery to help empower their story of recovery.
  • You will demonstrate the Telecare mission, purpose, values, and beliefs in everyday language and contact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Draws upon own personal recovery experience with mental/addiction challenges as a basis for engagement as a peer with members served and to validate members' own lived experiences
  • Consistently utilizes recovery language and a strength-based approach to assist members served to reach their fullest potential
  • Participates in verbal de-escalation and physical interventions in emergent situations and is willing and able to assist other staff as needed to maintain a safe, healing environment for all
  • Provides education and expertise from the perspective of a person with lived experience of mental illness to the team concerning various mental health/addiction recovery experiences

Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted and/or changed at the discretion of management.

Must have qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Certified Peer Specialist and/or completed Peer Support Training
  • One (1) year or part-time equivalent of experience supporting members served with behavioral health challenges
  • Experience as a beneficiary of the public Behavioral Health system of care
  • Successful completion of Peer Support Training or Peer Employment Training. (CA/AZ/NC/NE)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a valid and current driver 's license
  • Must have valid and current car insurance with your name of the insurance verification card
  • Must be willing and able to drive a transit van in the community as a crisis responder
